I have the old Teramar Southwest Coast casting rod(7'6"). Both the new and old rods are very fast taper, ie stiff like a broomstick. When I use this rod, I fear no fish. Its light but strong and tough. It can throw big baits and pull big fish. I was able to use it off the party boat rockfishing with 10oz weights at 100 feet. But its a little difficult to do finesse movements(I can barely cast 1/2oz lures). And its probably not sensitive enough for using live bait and for trolling.
I think some people find parabolic tapers easier to use. And other people can adapt to faster rods.

This is the second of these rods that I own. Light in weight and lots of back bone. I've fished the Sea of Cortez in baja, inshore in San Diego and fished the waters of the Colorado river. Worked great in every situation.
